VANDODARA: An honest citizen has come forward to expose another scam surrounding the Aadhar card. Indravadan Rathod, a resident of the Tarsali area, did the right thing by surprising a ward office of Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), handling Aadhar registrations, with a team of media personnel and described how he was told he could bypass the usual wait time and registration process if he paid extra money.
The usual registration process includes fingerprinting, an iris scan, and taking a photograph, as well as checking your proof of identity and proof of address. Then, an applicant must wait between 60-90 days, or longer depending on the work load and speed of the registration office. Rathod first became aware of the scam when requesting a card for his son in June. He was told that if gave Rs 100, he would not have to wait for his registration like everyone else. He was previously asked to pay the same amount when applying for Aadhar cards for his wife and himself. As an Aadhar card is free to everyone, the extra money is clearly a scam.
"People come early in the morning before daybreak to get themselves registered. Then they have to come again at the time given to them to get themselves registered and give their fingerprints as well as retina scans. By paying money you can bypass the entire process," Rathod said. R.K. Scooger, deputy municipal commissioner at VMC stated that the employee in question has been removed from his position and that the firm handling the registrations has been issued a notice.
In this one act, Rathod has made an example of this registration office and the individual behind the scam. To clear the Aadhar card process of these types of scams works to reduce the frustration felt by those who move through the registration process by following the rules, waiting in long lines, and anticipate their cards for months. Rathod may be setting a higher standard for those in the registration offices, but also for his fellow applicants to report any behavior that is detrimental to the registration process.
